Don’t Read The Latin! Episode 61: Witches!
Welcome back! This episode marks a new, exciting time for Don’t Read the Latin, as Michael Montoure has decided to step back from co-hosting for now as he has a lot on his plate at the moment. Jennifer Lovely is still happily here, though, discussing horror movies and her love of them, and each episode will have a rotating cast of co-hosts joining her. There will be many of the voices you’ve heard in previous episodes, and we can all look forward to some new ones joining the mix, too!

DRtL Episode 52: The Monstrous Feminine!
Welcome back! Joining us for another episode of Don’t Read the Latin is Jillian Venters from Gothic Charm School! This time, in the wake of election results that are arguably more terrifying than any movie we’ve ever discussed, we decided to get our feminist rant on and sat down to talk about The Monstrous Feminine — the idea of women as monsters in horror movies and pop culture.
Along the way, we discuss Gothic romance novels, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios, the role that Mad Max: Fury Road played in the beginning of Jen’s relationship with Handsome Boyfriend Jim, and we wonder why the hell Marvel keeps burying pretty actors under way too much prosthetic makeup, and we wrap it all up with the topic of older women having a voice and taking up space in our society. We don’t necessarily do a great job of sticking rigidly to our topic in this episode, but we sure hope you’ll think it’s an interesting conversation. Check it out.

Episode Eighteen: Shout at the Devil!
Hey, everyone! Join us as we delve into the occult reaches of a subject that …. it turns out we don’t really know a lot about! (I resisted the urge to say, a hell of a lot about. Don’t you admire my restraint?) This time, the subject on deck is Demons, Devils, and Possession, and while that idea sounded good when we first discussed it, our research soon showed that there were approximately one million films on this subject in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s that we just flat-out have not seen.
Regardless, we soldiered on, and we talked about some of the best — and worst! — devilry we’ve witnessed on the silver screen. Enjoy! As always, tell your friends, reblog and retweet the hell out of this episode (sorry — my restraint only goes so far), and if you would be so kind, rate us on iTunes! Thanks much. See you in two weeks!
Other Stuff We Talked About
Here’s the new review Michael mentioned for his novel: Still Life – Michael Montoure | The Reader In the Tower.
And here’s a picture of the Exorcist III art print that Jennifer mentioned. Click the image to view it full-sized. The artist is Slippery Jack, and that link goes to his Big Cartel page if you’d like to pick up a print of your own.
Finally, when we talked about Rosemary’s Baby in this episode, we discussed whether or not you ever see the baby’s eyes. Michael thought we didn’t, and Jennifer was pretty sure that we at least saw a flash of them. Here’s the scene in question, and we do see a quick flash of inhuman yellow eyes — but Michael thinks it looks more like it might be a flashback to the face of the devil seen during the baby’s freaky, dreamlike conception scene. Compare the two, decide for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Episode Four: Women Directing Horror
We’re back, and we’re talking about some of the best horror films you might not even know were directed by women! Join us again for all this and more:

- Jennifer talks about what it was like to watch American Psycho for the first time recently
- We declare our love for the 80’s classic Near Dark and the 80’s maybe-not-so-classic Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare
- We talk about why we were disappointed in American Mary but still can’t wait to see what’s next from the Soska Sisters
- Michael explains why he can’t wait to show Jennifer Ravenous, and he finds out something he’d rather not know about one of the actors in it

Episode Two: What Is Horror, Anyway?
“Does everything fail to be a horror movie? Oh my God, nothing’s actually horror!”
“Why do we even have this podcast — ? All right, folks, that’s it, there’s not going to be an episode three ….”
_______
Welcome back to our second episode, where we decide to tackle a highly subjective and ultimately completely unanswerable question! What is horror? Because we don’t shy away from the hard topics! (We’re not smart enough to yet.)
